Requirements or registered community pharmacists working under the Patient Group Direction (PGD) for using Azithromycin to treat Chlamydia

Initial training

Before offering the service, all pharmacists providing treatment under the PGD must complete the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (Opens in a New Window) (CPPE) online assessment on Safeguarding Children

Able to demonstrate competency in line with the NICE Good Practice Guidance: Competency Framework for Using Patient Group Directions PGDs

Ongoing training and competency

Keep update your competency on CPPE Safeguarding for children
Attend a local sexual health training session every year (attendance not required before signing the PGD, but pharmacists will be encouraged to attend for background knowledge and communication skills
The pharmacy must have a copy of the current British National Formulary (BNF) available for reference and be familiar with the information in the BNF about the use of Doxycycline and Azithromycin.

Lines of accountability

A registered pharmacist is accountable for his or her actions in accordance with the General Pharmaceutical Council. All registered pharmacists are personally accountable for their practice and in the exercise of professional accountability there is a requirement to maintain and improve their professional knowledge and competence. The PGD may only be used within the confines of the service specification by pharmacists and pharmacies contracted by Public Health Hackney.
